HYPOGLYCEMIA

One out every ten puppy buyers do not care for their new puppy properly after the puppy leaves its birth home. Main cause... lack of food, and too much play time with young children and not enough rest time.

Hypoglycemia (the medical term for low blood sugar) is not a disease or sickness nor is it genetic or inherited. Hypoglycemia ia a metabolic disorder- low blood sugar death will result unless properly diagnosed and cared for Properly and immediately. It is very difficult to recover from a bad bout of Hypoglycemia. It can reoccur while trying to recover from it. It can also damage vital organs from too many episodes. Hypoglycemia can weaken the immune system and create other illnesses, like pneumonia. Toy breed puppies are the only breed that cannot regulate their own sugar level and body tempature completely 100% on their own until they weigh 3 pounds.

Hypoglycemia is usually found in tiny toy breed puppies (most commonly affected breeds and the fastest, Yorkie, Yorkie mix, Maltese, Maltese mix, and Pomeranian or Pom mix ) But do include all Toy breeds. Hypoglycemia does not just come from, lack of food. It essentially does but there can be other factors that make it worse and happen faster. Hypoglycemia usually only occurs in 8-20 weeks old puppies. Often it occurs after a move from one environment to another. Mostly from lack of care. The percentage of new Toy Breed puppy owners that do not care for their new puppy well enough is about 40%, which is super high !!! The main reason is because in general people think all dogs are the same. They are far from being the same. Toy Breeds shouldnt even be considered the same species of other dogs.

Hypoglycemia doesn't just come from, lack of food. It essentially does but there are other factors that make it worse & happen faster.

~Poor diet. This is easy, feed your puppy often and well. Know things like dont mix wet food and dry food together. Dry food when it gets wet starts to grow bacteria within 6 hours. Wet food should be refrigerated always and properly. Wet can food only belongs in a can when it is on the shelf un-opened. Once opened it should be refrigerated in a plastic container with a cover of some sort. Puppies need dry puppy food. Foods that move well through a puppy when its young and helps with all stages of change are chicken, brown rice, peas, carrots, Cottage cheese, Probiotic Yorgurt, eggs and well drained hamburger, Dry puppy food, wet food and clean water. Clean water means, the water bowl is dumped out on a daily basis, rinsed or washed and refilled.

~Over handling and not enough sleep or rest.  What is over handling ? Taking the puppies too many places. Letting too many friends, neighbors handle the puppy, check out the new puppy. An older dog or puppy in the home playing witht he puppy for too long. Waking the puppy constantly. Important....8-14 week old puppies sleep 80% percent of their day. Going to the groomer and the vet all in the same day can lead to Hypoglycemia, do one at at a time, different days. Holding the puppy all the time and it doesnt get something to drink or eat when it comes to mind and the puppy is thinking about it. Puppies are impulsive. When the moment of thirst and hunger arrises, the oppurtunity should be there. If someone is always holding the puppy and not giving it enough floor time, it misses those moments it may have gotten a drink or eaten a few kibbles. Holding a puppy all the time keeps it awake too much too. All this can lead to Hypoglycemia. Toy breed puppies are the only breed that cannot regulate their own sugar level and body tempature completely 100% on their own until they weigh 3 pounds. So they need warmth, fed often and given proper amount of rest.

~Young children, all children.... including teenagers and young adults. Are a puppy's worst nightmare. Toy breed puppies shouldnt be purchased for children. They are not toys. When you hand a toy breed puppy that weighs 2 pounds to a young child, you just handed them a 2 week old human baby. Nothing wears a toy breed puppy out more than a child or children. Not to mention the danger of dropping the small puppy. Or stepping on the puppy from running children. When children keep the puppy awake too long from holding the puppy, carrying the puppy around, taking the puppy everywhere they go (young adults and teenagers) playing with the puppy and so on... they drink and eat less and they sleep less. Then to make matters worse the puppy will sleep too long from being so wore out and miss more meals, Leading to a fast case of hypoglycemia.

~Trips... Vet, Saloon. Is all neccesary and part of being a new puppy owner. It has to be done. But should be done with care and caution. Pay attention for signs of stress, like panting and vomiting which happens during the first 4 weeks of vehicle riding until they get used to it. New puppies dont belong in vehicles...only when neccesary. Meaning taking a puppy everywhere you go the first four weeks is not a good idea.

~Other misc outings, Traing classes, social groups and car rides. Not neccesary, These trips shouldnt be happening until the puppy is in its new home for atleast 4 weeks and has had all its shots and wormers completed and has made proper environmental adjustments.

~Playing too much or for too long. A major problem with Toy Breeds and new puppy owners. Puppies should only be allowed so many minutes to run and romp and play and then they should rest. They shouldnt be allowed to run loose everywhere in a home or yard like a crazed lunatic all over the place and trust me they will try to do it...... Its a puppy, like a kid, sometimes they dont know when to rest or that they have over exerted themselves. Puppies should be kept calm and have a secure place to nap, like a crate and only have a couple of rooms to explore and run about when in a new home. Puppies that play too much and are over exerted use more calories and food faster and will become Hypoglycemia fast, within one day or two. Playing too much for too long can cause vomiting which will lead to Hypoglycemia even faster.

~Change of food. Is tough but it has to happen and should be monitored with care and caution. When Toy Breed puppies miss a meal...it matters. This can lead to Hypoglycemia.

~Change of environment is taken very personally by a Toy Breed puppy. Why ? Well other sizes of dog breeds have mostly been bred for work ethic. Hunting, tracking, herding, guarding, sporting etc. Not the Toy Breed though, they have been bred for hundreds of years for nothing more than personal companionship. So they take their job very seriously, their job being to be attached to their family and provide companionship to their family. So at 8-10 weeks when they leave their human family and that includes their family of dogs, mom, dad, siblings....they dont make adjustments as fast as lets say other dog sizes, like Minature, Medium, Large and Giant breeds. Moving from one home to another for a Toy Breed puppy is very personal to them, its very upseting and can cause an array of issues immediately. Leading to Hypoglycemia.

~Abuse I guess what some folks consider abuse would vary and can maybe vary from different breed sizes. Of course we are only discussing Toy Breeds. Rubbing a Toy Breed puppy nose into its poop, yelling at it, screaming, smacking , tossing outside, Tying up, and an angry mean composure is all unacceptable. Children over playing, over handling, screaming and running amok through the home scarring the puppy is abusive. Hauling it all over the place, to see your friends, your family....showing the puppy off is abusive. Walking the puppy too far, a too hot day, at low weight and age....abusive. Crating too much, not home enough...Abusive. Leaving a new puppy outside alone for too long whining and crying is abusive. We can go on and on but we consider it to be abuse, whether on purpose or whether ignorantly not knowing. All this abuse will make a Toy Breed puppy eat and drink less. Causing Hypoglycemia.

Hot weather is always a major concern or over heated or over exerted. New Puppy owners of Toy Breed puppies should NOT be walking their puppy around the block , down the street at such a young age of 12 weeks or younger or 2.5 pounds or less. These are babies, what would you do with a three month old baby. ?? On a more personal note and we found it to be shocking.......We found out a few different customers walked their 1.5 pound puppy (Yorkie 1.4 lbs, Chihuahua 1.7 lbs and Shihtese 2.0 lbs ) around the block one week after purchase and it was 90-95 degrees outside. These arent 9 pound Lab puppies. Toy breed puppies under 2.5 pounds are not big enough or old enough to take on such a brisk walk. Think about the energy and calories used to do this. Two of these puppies collasped after the walk and had to be taken to the vets office for dehydration and then the next day they dealt with Hypoglycemia. We wonder how often this happens and we dont know about it. Puppies that are over exerted burn more calories and will become Hypoglycemia fast, within one day or two. Over exertion can cause vomiting which will lead to Hypoglycemia even faster. Over exertion can also cause Dehydration, leading to Hypoglycemia even faster. So as you can see it can be like a downward spiral.

Common Parasites like Worms, Cocci and Giardia....this mostly happens because the new buyer doesnt notice bad stool or because there is nothing done about bad looking stool and or the puppy has waited to long for a vet visit. Paraiste and Infections will aid in the event of Hypoglycemia

Number of times we used the word Hypoglycemia.....22 times !!
